Why this exists

Most conversations about research funding and careers default to two options: academia or industry. But the landscape is far richer than that — and most people navigating it have no map. Structures for Research is an attempt to build one.

What this site is

Hi, I'm Bianca Le!

This website was largely vibecoded by me as a way to read, synthesize, and learn about alternative structures for research institutions.

I'm a cell biologist by training, with over a decade of experience across academia, a science nonprofit, and a biotech startup. Through this work, I became increasingly interested in how research itself is structured... and how those structures shape what science gets done.

This is very much a draft (v1.0). In the spirit of open research, transparency, and community peer review, I'd love your feedback. I am by no means an economist or metascientist, nor do I have formal expertise in the fields that study these systems. I stand on the shoulders of giants, and have simply tried to categorize and make sense of ideas from brilliant thinkers like Ben Reinhardt, Sam Aberdeen, Eric Gilliam, and many others.

If you have thoughts — what could be improved, what's missing, or even what was helpful — I'd love to hear from you. Please share your feedback here.
